Punderdome: A Card Game for Pun Lovers - Review

Punderdome: A Card Game for Pun LoversPunderdome: A Card Game for Pun Lovers by Jo Firestone
My rating: 3 of 5 stars
Published June 21st 2016 by Clarkson Potter

From the daughter-father duo that created Brooklyn's beloved live pun competition comes Punderdome, the "Punderful card game [that] will replace Cards Against Humanity at your next party" (

One part game, one part conversation starter, you don't need to be a pun master to master Punderdome: the goal is to make bad jokes and have fun along the way.

A player (the prompter for that round) draws two prompt cards from the deck, and then reads the prompts to the rest of the group, who have 90 seconds to create a single, groan-worthy pun that combines the two prompts.

When time is up, pun makers share their puns with the prompter, who awards the prompt cards to the player whose pun he or she likes best. The winner then draws the next pair of prompt cards and the process repeats. Players win by obtaining 10 pairs of cards.

High Summer Read-a-thon Update

Pages read: 415
Books finished: 2

I'm gonna call that a good week. I have to admit I see the number 400 and can't believe it, like I can't figure out where they came from.

High Summer Read-a-thon Start Up

This read-a-thon would have been great last week since I had the house (more or less) to myself. Not that I got much reading done; it's one of those weeks were you look back and can't entirely say what you did.
Honestly though, I woke up around 5 this morning realizing I could probably say the same about the last ten months. Changes are coming, and (hopefully) I mean it this time.

Moving on to the books now:

Sister DearSister Dear by Laura McNeill
My rating: 4.5 of 5 stars
Published April 19th 2016 by Thomas Nelson

All Allie Marshall wants is a fresh start.  But when dark secrets refuse to stay buried, will her chance at a new life be shattered forever?

Convicted of a crime she didn’t commit, Allie watched a decade of her life vanish – time that can never be recovered. Now, out on parole, Allie is determined to clear her name, rebuild her life, and reconnect with the daughter she barely knows.

But Allie’s return home shatters the quaint, coastal community of Brunswick, Georgia. Even her own daughter Caroline, now a teenager, bristles at Allie’s claims of innocence. Refusing defeat, a stronger, smarter Allie launches a battle for the truth, digging deeply into the past even if it threatens her parole status, personal safety, and the already-fragile bond with family.

As her commitment to finding the truth intensifies, what Allie ultimately uncovers is far worse than she imagined. Her own sister has been hiding a dark secret—one that holds the key to Allie’s freedom.

Vignettes by Louise Caiola
My rating: 5 of 5 stars

It’s a first love unfinished, a family bond tested and forged. It’s a young woman staring at the messy underside of her dreams, and another facing a future she hasn’t chosen for herself. We meet an alcoholic country singer trying to be a father, a child who may never hear the beautiful sound of his mother’s voice, a fallen hero’s daughter, a stray who stays, and so much more. In PETIT FLEURS and its companion VIGNETTES, we come to know fascinating and flawed people from all over the world, each with a unique story to tell - scenes of life shown throughout the years. Secrets exposed, tender hellos, and tumultuous goodbyes.

This multi-faceted two-book collection of short stories captures those defining moments that challenge and change us, those that serve as the catalyst to our greatest experiences, our dearest memories, our deepest joy, and perhaps our sincerest sorrows.

Ideal for readers ranging from the seasoned literary fan to today’s savvy young adults.
